Recipe of the Month

For those who are still celebrating Chinese new year. Pack these sticky Chinese-style chicken legs in your next picnic.

Sticky Sesame Chicken Legs

Ingredients:

  • 125ml (1/2 cup) salt-reduced soy sauce
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) honey
  • 2 tbs Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
  • 2 tsp finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 12 chicken legs
  • 1 tbs sesame seeds
  1. Combine the soy sauce, honey, rice wine, ginger and garlic in a glass or ceramic dish. Add the chicken and turn to coat. Cover and place in the fridge for 2 hours to marinate.
  2. Preheat oven to 200°C. Line a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Drain the chicken, reserving the marinade. Place the chicken on the lined tray.
  3. Bake in oven, basting occasionally with reserved marinade, for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and bake for a further 10 minutes or until chicken is golden and the juices run clear when the thickest part of the leg is pierced with a skewer.

Co-ordinator's News

Hi ,

Happy New Year. I hope you all had a wonderful time over the holiday period and are refreshed for 2009.

The first function of the year is the Trivia Celebration on the 18th February. The celebration will incorporate a Trivia Quiz which will be open to all participants. The quiz will be all in the name of fun so make sure to RSVP. February will also host the first Mentor Training of the year. Please make all the new mentors feel welcome.

June 30 this year will see the end of the Scheme's core funding from the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The Scheme is desperately trying to determine if the funding will be renewed. At this stage we have no indication. This funding is essential to the Scheme's operations, therefore there is the chance that the Scheme will not be operating after that date. This of course would be an enormous loss to the community, mentors and the key stakeholders-mentees. Other funding sources are being investigated in order to assist the continuation of the Scheme.

What this means for the Scheme is that at this stage the February Mentor Training will go ahead as well as matches of mentors and mentees. However all matches are only guaranteed to be supported by the Scheme until June 30 unless other funding is secured. Any contact after that date between the mentor and mentee would need to be with full consent from the mentees' guardians.

We certainly hope that between now and the next newsletter that funding is secured and it will be business as usual for the Scheme; that is Encouraging and Supporting Young People in our Community through Mentoring.

Community support for the Scheme is immense and is greatly appreciated. We will keep you updated on this matter. Your support and understanding during this time is valued.

Kind Regards,
Anita Andacic

Careers and Job Seeking

With the start of a New Year, Mentors have a great opportunity to explore Careers and Job Seeking with their mentees.

Mentees will be at different stages when it comes to thinking about their future but it is never too early to start the process. You can get them started by:

  • Referring back to the mentees' interests.
  • Asking simple questions about whether they have thought about what they would like to do in the future or even asking what sort of things they would like to own in the future which will stimulate conversation about earning money.
  • Visiting different workplaces and talking to people who are employed in the areas they are interested in and even asking if there are any opportunities for job placements in the future. Keep a journal with your mentee of ideas, who you visited, contact numbers/business cards and/or brochures that they can keep for the future.

The 10 Mentor Commandments

What are the qualities of an effective mentor? These are the 10 important features of successful mentors' attitudes and styles:

  1. Be a friend.
  2. Have realistic goals and expectations.
  3. Have fun together.
  4. Give your mentee voice and choice in deciding on activities.
  5. Be positive.
  6. Let your mentee have much of the control over what the two of you talk about, and how you talk about it.
  7. Listen.
  8. Respect the trust your mentee places in you.
  9. Remember that your relationship is with the mentee, not the mentee's parent.
  10. Remember that you are responsible for building the relationship.

Successful mentors understand that positive changes in the lives of young people do not happen quickly or automatically. If they are to happen at all, the mentor and mentee must meet long enough and often enough to build a relationship that helps the mentee feel supported and safe, develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and see new possibilities in life.
