Co-ordinator's News
Hi ,
The past few months have been very busy with the Scheme. August saw the Bowling Celebration. Once again there was a pumpkin for those who bowled a strike. It was a great afternoon and certainly is a venue that the Scheme will utilize again for a Celebration.
The Bunnings BBQ was a huge success with $900 being raised. Each time we do a Bunnings BBQ it still amazes me that people can eat so many sausages! Perhaps the brilliant cooking skills of CYMS mentors was a contributor.
The Trivia Night was also a success with $2600 being raised. Two hundred and thirty people came along to participate where competition and laughs were rife. A group called "The Guns" took top spot and won the trivia night. Many Cairns organisations supported the event through donating prizes. Mentor Jan Hill along with The Reef Hotel Casino donated use of their venue. Without their assistance and support from the CYMS community the event would not have been a success. This will certainly be an annual event.
It is Celebration and Christmas time again. This December the Celebration will be held at the Flexible Learning Centre Basketball Courts. The night will be action packed with activities, BBQ sausage sizzle and of course the celebration ceremony for mentees and mentors who have completed their 6 month relationship.
During the Christmas period the CYMS Office will be closed from 19th December 2008 to January 12th 2009. During this time mentors are still required to lodge their activities by email or leaving a message on the phone. Please ensure that Duty of Care is applied and parental consent is gained before any activity with your mentee is undertaken. If there is an urgent matter that requires addressing please contact the appropriate support service available or Helga Biro at Centacare Cairns on 4044 0133 during office hours between 05/01/09-10/01/09. Please contact the CYMS office if you would like the list of support services.
Wishing you all a safe and prosperous Christmas and New Year.
Kind Regards,
Anita Andacic

Elvis appeared at the Trivia Night!
'Elvis' was a special guest at the Trivia night. Here he is pictured asking the trivia questions for the music round. 'Reg Ragan' from the Footy Show and 'Professor Charles Whitingale the third' from Oxford University also made guest appearances and presented questions during the Trivia night.
The Scheme would like to thank Tammie for doing the Trivia questions and answers, Rohan for organizing the guest presenters, Tuija who kept the score board updated, Helga, Leonie and Jessye who sold raffle tickets, the Action Group, and the CYMS community who came along and supported the event.
CYMS Mentor Recruits
Please welcome the Scheme's newest recruits from the November Mentor Training Session.
The group of training mentors was double the size of the previous training day and was very interactive where learning and many jokes and laughs were shared.
Mentor training includes sessions on communication with young people, stages of adolescent development, an opportunity to talk to past and present mentees and mentors and an opportunity for mentors to workshop activity ideas. It is also a forum where mentors build networks and friendships.
Mentee-Mentor Testimonials
Peter's and Storm's riding adventure
My name is Peter Goulding. I am a mentor to Storm.
Last year I rode from Cairns to Cooktown with 130 other riders to raise money for the Cairns Hospital Foundation. The ride was called the Cardiac Challenge. Over $115,000 was raised.
In June I mentioned to Storm that the ride was coming up again in September. He expressed keen interest in going on it and we started to undertake training rides. He worked hard on those rides and on four occasions we cycled more than 60 kms to get fit.
He raised his entrance fee and sold the necessary $300 of raffle tickets.
The ride started on 27 September. Just on 130 riders took part. Storm used a heavy mountain bike that belonged to my wife. Most riders had lightweight road bikes. The organisers doubted that Storm would be able to do the bulk of the ride given his age, the bike he was using and his lack of experience in long distance riding. Also, he didn't have cleats or toe straps on his bike. Most riders had these supports.
He did it all except for the Kuranda range (15 kms) and the first 5 kms of the Desailly range. With these sections he was advised by the organisers to not ride mainly because of the dangers involved. In all he cycled just on 320 kms over 3 days through often very hilly terrain.
It was an incredible effort. Everybody on the ride noted his determination and commitment. He won the 'most determined rider' award at the presentations. The ride will be on again next year. Training rides begin 6 months out.
For more information contact the Cairns Hospital Foundation.
