If you would be happy for your details to transfer to the new Cairns Youth Mentoring Inc. please this let us know by emailing us on:

This is really important as come December 31, the new Cairns Youth Mentoring Scheme Inc. will lose contace with you and not be able to draw on the experience learned through your connection with the Scheme.

Courage

"Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live."
~ Dorothy Thompson

"One man with courage makes a majority."
~ Andrew Jackson

"Courage is more exhilarating than fear and in the long run it is easier. We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up, seeing it is not as dreadful as it appeared, discovering we have the strength to stare it down."
~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Co-ordinator's News

Hi ,

There are exciting times ahead now for the Cairns Youth Mentoring Scheme! The process of securing a future through incorporation is underway. This simply means that the Cairns Youth Mentoring Scheme will not cease to exist after December.

As many of you may remember a ‘Call to action’ went out in September for all interested people who would like to see the scheme continue. The response was fantastic! Many wonderful people pledged their support of the scheme. A number of meetings were held to determine the best course of action, and so incorporation was agreed upon and pursued. With the help of FNQ Volunteers (who supplied us with knowledge and advice on incorporation) we now have a very competent management committee who are swiftly setting up the new structures necessary to run the scheme independently.

I personally have felt very privileged to have been a part of this process, and it gives me great joy to see the scheme continue. I also look forward to continue being involved with the scheme into the future on a voluntary basis.

Kind Regards,
John Shay
CYMS Worker

Dear Readers,

Nine years ago, Centacare Cairns, with much community impetus and involvement, established CYMS to assist young people find a friendship with an adult aimed at encouraging and supporting them.  There have been many positive outcomes for young people since then.

CYMS also benefited the adults who volunteered to be their mentors. Mentors indicated the program brought many positive changes in their own lives. The community also benefited from the CYMS by bringing organisations, community groups and community members together to work for the benefit of young people.

So it is with considerable regret that Centacare relinquishes CYMS at the end of December 2009.  It has been a battle at times to attract funds but it doesn’t mean that the Scheme needs finish because of that.  The good news is that CYMS started as a community project and it is being returned to the community.  We will do all we can to assist in the transition.  All the intellectual property and materials developed during the life of the Scheme will go to the new incorporated body; CYMS Inc.

We owe thanks to: the many wonderful mentors who gave so generously of their time in the interest of their mentee; the mentees from whom we learned so much about the world of young people who enrich our lives; the Reference Group which in time became the Action Group; Education QLD- our partners through the Flexible Learning Centre; the Federal Government for funding the Scheme for 9 years; and our local community that supported us in many ways from fundraising and recruiting to assisting with the web-site, promotions and so much more.

Management Committee Members

Jenelle is a mother of three (13, 14 and 18yrs) and works fulltime as a dental assistant and medical admin receptionist. She’s passionate about helping others whom are less fortunate in our community, as she has been through some very hard times with her autistic son Anthony. Eboni runs a programme called Get Set for Work for 15-17 year olds, that helps those disengaged from school, often affected by drugs, alcohol or violence, and offers support to get them back into education. Eboni is delighted to be part of the Cairns Youth Mentoring Scheme. She enrolled as a Mentor early in the year and is looking forward to using her skills to help a young person achieve their potential.
